Sutco Polska took part in the conference on "Waste of the Municipality" in Kielce

From 10 to 12 June 2026, representatives of Sutco Polska attended the national conference "Waste of the Municipality" (Odpady w gminie), organized by Ekorum. For many years, this event has brought together representatives of local authorities, municipal companies, professional associations and experts involved in the development of modern waste management systems.

Key Challenges facing the sector
The conference programme  included a range of topical issues relevant to the operation of  waste management systems. In particular, participants discussed ways of achieving mandatory recycling targets, the impact of introducing a deposit-refund system on the fees payable by residents, the organization of tenders, and opportunities to optimize the operation costs of municipal systems. Municipalities’ preparations for the introduction of extended producer responsibility (EPR), as well as measures to improve the integrity and enhance the effectiveness of monitoring municipal waste management systems, were also a key focus of discussion.

The panel dedicated to the deposit-refund system and the practical preparations for implementing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) attracted particular interest among participants. The discussions highlighted just how important cooperation is between local authorities, businesses and the institutions responsible for shaping waste policy in Poland.

One of the highlights of the conference programme was the presentation by our speaker Jakub Złotosia, who spoke on the topic ‘Plastic sorting in the context of the deposit-refund system’. The presentation focused on the risks and challenges that the introduction of a deposit-refund system poses for waste management. Discussions centred on the impact on rising operating costs for facilities, the difficulties in achieving the prescribed recycling rates, and the consequences for local authorities and municipal companies.

The Swedish experience: a source of inspiration for the Polish market
The presentation on the Swedish system aroused keen interest: despite having had a deposit-refund system in place for many years, Sweden has one of the most advanced plastic waste sorting facilities in the world. The construction of this facility was entrusted to the company Sutco, which supplied the technological solutions used.

The conference brought together representatives from local authorities, industry experts, legal professionals and practitioners with extensive experience in waste management. Numerous presentations, expert round-table discussions and lively debates facilitated an open exchange of knowledge and experience, as well as the development of practical solutions tailored to the sector’s needs. One of the event’s key strengths was the opportunity to directly compare different perspectives and foster dialogue between participants responsible for various elements of the system.

The Garbage Truck Route
The practical component was also an integral part of the conference. Participants took part in an excursion entitled ‘The Garbage Truck Route’, during which they were able to discover how the waste management system works in practice – from the separate collection of waste to the activities of the PSZOK, including a visit to the modern facility of the Promnik waste management company, which comprises a waste sorting station and a biogas plant designed to generate energy from waste.

Our company’s participation in the conference "Waste of the Municipality" provided a valuable opportunity to exchange experiences, showcase our expertise and play an active role in discussions on the future of the sector. We would like to thank the organiser – Ekorum – for putting on this enriching event, as well as all the participants for the inspiring discussions and the exchange of experiences.
